Abstract

Indonesia is known as a country with the highes biodiversity, including ferns (Pteridophyta), which are an important part of tropical flora. The Keumuning Protected Forest area in Langsa City, Aceh, covers approximately 1,050 hectares and serves as a natural habitat that supports the taxonomic diversity of ferns. This study aims to identify and document the diversity of fern species in the area to support biodiversity conservation and preservation efforts. The method used is exploratory descriptive, employing field survey techniques, as well as morphological identification based on literature and visual documentation. The results of the study indicate the presence of eight fern species belonging to six families and one taxonomic class, with a predominance of the Polypodiopsida class. The species found exhibit diverse morphological variations, playing a crucial role as environmental bioindicators and erosion control agents. These findings underscore the importance of the Keumuning Protected Forest as a natural habitat that plays a vital role in supporting biodiversity and its ecosystem. Therefore, protection, sustainable conservation, and enhanced public education are essential to ensure the long-term preservation of these ferns and the protected forest ecosystem.
